Our Everyman Adventures

This collection of blogs and videos started because I wanted to share my experiences of Scotland and the wonderful adventures we have there especially in the Highlands and Islands.

Whilst both my partner (JD) and I had been to Scotland many times before we met, we first visited together on the North Coast 500 coming out of the first Covid lockdown in 2020 and we fell in love … with the place and each other! We were back again that October, three times the following year, and it’s been at least three visits each year ever since. We’ve been with my teenage daughter and more recently with our shiba inu who joined the family in 2023.

I decided to call this section ‘Everyman Adventures’ for two reasons. The first is I have taken the concept of ‘everyman’ from the medieval morality play of the same name. For those who don’t know it, the play explores how we best understand life when faced with death. Scotland is a place full of life and death where I find peace and a renewed ability to appreciate what really matters by confronting the transience of our existence. It is a place where people come and go in the blink of an eye and often the homesteads they build crumble away. It is the dramatic landscape that remains which nature allows you to hare with her for the briefest of moments as you walk where many a traveller has been before you.

The second reason is that I am not a super adventurer who scales mountains and dives to depths. I am a middle-aged woman who works behind a desk, likes cake, and drinks too much coffee. I’m petrified of heights and a little claustrophobic. But there is so much to enjoy in Scotland and plenty of opportunities to push myself out of my comfort zone especially with a courageous companion beside me!

I hope you enjoy our adventures and, more importantly, I hope they inspire you to seek adventures of your own ….
